Describe what you like to represent and what you wonât represent. Iâm passionate about representing childrenâs literature (picture books, middle grade, and young adult) in every genre, and I also represent illustrators, adult literary fiction (writers with something special to say and a special way of saying it), commercial fiction, mystery, thriller, horror. In nonfiction, I love to represent celebrity bios and anything and everything about Hollywood/entertainment/theater/dance/behind-the-scenes, memoir, biography, pop culture, true crime, self-help, parenting, humor. In general, Iâm open to any well-written book, either fiction or nonfiction, in any genre.
I donât represent poetry, Westerns, romance, or erotica.
What are the best ways for writers to pitch you? Email a query to me at [email protected].
When and where were you born? New York City.
Do you charge fees? No.
Describe your education and career history. Brooklyn College, New York University. Was a dancer and actress, writing consultant, freelance editor for Random House and Simon & Schuster, and literary agent for two established New York City literary agencies. Started my own literary agency in 2001.
Say something about your hobbies and personal interests. Itâs a struggle for me to do any of the following because I have so little free time these days, but Iâm passionate about reading (everything), writing (working on a screenplay at the moment), ballet (someday I vow to get back to it and take classes just for the fun of it), skiing (love shushing down the slopes, but equally love sipping hot cocoa by a roaring fire), travel (Iâm in love with Italy and spent several months there recently), movies/theater (what I could have done with that role â oy!), piano (been taking lessons for the past 15 years and will keep at it until I croak).
Why and how did you become an agent? How I became an agent is too long a story to tell, but I started my own agency because I wanted to make a difference: I wanted to help put great books out into the world, and I wanted to help make writersâ dreams come true. It was an accidental career for me, but itâs what I believe I was put on this planet to do.
Would you do it over again, or something else? Iâd do it all over again.
